The youth who cannot be identified is set to be released from prison later this year.
The teenager who admitted to killing Brandy Vittrekwa has had his custody conditions changed.
The youth, now 18 years old and cannot be identified will be classified as open custody, and therefore having less restrictions.
The order was given Friday, at the objections of the Vittrekwa family, who believe justice was not served.
But Judge Peter Chisolm noted that the youth has made progress and that designating him to open custody will serve to help reintegrate him back into society.
Vittrekwa was found dead in December of 2014 on a trail in the MacIntyre subdivision.
A young man pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the beating death and was sentenced in June 2016 to the maximum three-years of incarceration.
With time served before sentencing, the youth has five months remaining in custody, before he enters conditional community supervision.
