CRA Scammers

The Canada Revenue Agency is warning the public about scammers using tax season to trick Canadians into paying fake debts.

If you receive a suspicious email, phone call, letter, or text message from someone claiming to be a Canada Revenue Agency employee, protect yourself by asking for the caller's name and position and tell them you will call them back.

Contact the Canada Revenue Agency and confirm that the caller is legitimate before providing any personal information.

Lisa Ko Is a Canada Revenue Agency Spokesperson. She says to protect yourself from scams, it's important to know when and how the CRA might contact you. 

She says the first thing to know is that the Canada Revenue Agency will:
-never send you a text message. 
-never use aggressive language or tone
-never threaten to arrest or deport you.
-never request payment by gift cards or bitcoin.
-never ask for OR provide ?nancial information via email.

She says know your own tax situation and learn about the different scams that are being used.

If you have mistakenly given out personal information to a potential scammer or believe you are the victim of a scam, report it to the police as quickly as possible.
