First Nations leaders in Yukon say a newly-created body will give them more powers over control of the education of their students in the territory — working toward a separate school board.
At a news conference held yesterday CYFN grand Chief Peter Johnston announced an Education Directorate will replace the former Council of Yukon First Nations' education department.
"Dana Tizya-Tramm, is chair of the Chiefs Committee on Education and the chief of the Vuntut Gwitchin - The new directorate will have a staff of 12 people.
Tiyza-tramm says The directorate will "facilitate the creation of a Yukon First Nations School Board,"
Currently, Yukon only has one school board and it representing Francophone students. They have two schools , a highschool in Riverdale and an elementary school in Arkell
