A Indigenous Group from northern Tanzania in Africa is visiting the Carcross/Tagish First Nation this Thursday to learn more about land and water governance.

The Maasai delegation visit is part of a two week trip in Western Canada to develop relations with Canada's First Nations, and the cultural exchange is being funded by the University of Victoria.

The Maasai people negotiated a traditional land settlement with the Tanzanian government nearly ten years ago, and representatives will also learn about land claim processes, oral histories and cultural knowledge during their two-day visit.

In retrospect, The Maasai will offer their experiences and insights to Carcross/Tagish First Nations citizens around establishing self-governance over their traditional territory through a forest trust and the long settlement claim that occurred during the process.

The Carcross Tagish First Nations recently hosted a New Zealand Indigenous Maori delegation in 2018 to build and strengthen Indigenous relationships and partnerships on the world stage.
