National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebrations

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

In cooperation with Aboriginal organizations, the Canadian government chose June 21 for National  Indigenous Peoples Day because it was on or near the June solstice.

Many of Canada's Aboriginal peoples celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day for many generations.

In Whitehorse, the celebrations are held at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre at the banks of the Yukon River.

MC's of the celebrations are former commissioner Judy Gingell and Teagyn Vallevand, co-founder of Youth For Lateral Kindness.

CHON-FM will be broadcasting the festivities.
