Annie Blake is presently the Director of Health and Social Programs for the Vuntut Gwitchin government, where she oversees the delivery of a variety of social services to VGFN citizens. An important focus of her work has been supporting children and families as well as ensuring consistent access to mental health services throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I always strive to improve systems and supports that have a direct impact on the lives of citizens in my home community,” said Blake. “I’ve worked on the front line for a number of years, which enhanced my ability to understand the challenges people face in their daily lives. I want to use my voice to empower those who don’t feel like the system is working for them and bring peoples’ voices to the forefront.”

"Running in this election is an opportunity for me to advocate for the needs of our community. As a young child, our Elders taught me to listen and treat everyone with respect. No matter the struggles someone might face, we are all human and we all deserve dignity. As an MLA, I will continue to meet people where they are at and always listen to their perspective. I want to be able to contribute to enhancing the wellbeing of my home community for all citizens who call Old Crow home."

Yukon NDP leader Kate White was in Old Crow for community visits last week. She said citizens are excited to have Annie as their candidate.

"Everyone I've met has a story about a time when Annie has supported them," said White. "She's exactly who you want fighting for you in government. Annie gets things done for people."

The announcement comes one week after the Yukon NDP announced the candidacy of three other Indigenous women who are seeking nominations with the party.
