The Yukon Aboriginal Women Council brings awareness to MMIWG issues on Red Dress Day

It’s a way to make sure that the women and men and boys and girls that we’ve lost remains in peoples memories

The Yukon Aboriginal Women Council commemorated Red Dress Day on October 4 with a SISTERS IN SPIRIT vigil walk in Whitehorse, paying tribute to the victims and families affected by MMIWG.

This event is part of a nationwide initiative held annually in October to highlight the ongoing concerns surrounding violence against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals.

According to Anna Barley, YAWC's Acting Executive Director, the vigil serves as a vital reminder of the lives lost.

“It’s a way to make sure that the women and men and boys and girls that we’ve lost remains in people's memories and to bring awareness to the issue that continues to plaque the Yukon territory and all over Canada for indigenous women and girls and gender divers people,” Barley said.

The walk began at the Whitehorse RCMP Detachment office at 12pm, proceeded to Monument Park, and culminated at KDCC with a light meal and testimonial from a MMIWG2S+ family member.
