The Yukon Arts Centre will be filled with the sound of choir music this weekend. The Whitehorse Community Choir is presenting its annual Spring Concert at 8:00pm on Friday May 3rd and Saturday May 4th.
This year’s theme is Celtic music. A selection of traditional and modern Irish and Scottish songs will be performed by the 85 singers who make up three different choir groups.
Choir Director Barbara Chamberlin said it will be a bright and colourful show with choir members dressed in Tartans and supported by bagpipes and highland dancers. The list of songs may be familiar to most people, but as Barbara says, there will be a few surprises as well.
“Mouth music is a really interesting song. We hope it doesn’t scare people. Mouth music was created in Ireland and Scotland when the English said you can no longer sing songs in your own language. So it makes no sense at all, but people needed something to dance to and sometimes the violinists were not up to the job so they invented mouth music and they sing. It’s for dancing and it’s very interesting.” Barbara Chamberlin
The Whitehorse Community Choir celebrated its 25th anniversary last year and while the number of members fluctuates from year to year, the Community Choir continues to resonate as a shining beacon in Yukon’s vibrant arts community.
“The joy of music, especially singing, which is our God given right, and our God given instrument that you don’t have to buy anything for. It’s a pleasure to do it. Come join the choir. Find out some things that way. Keep playing. Find an instrument that you can accompany yourself with and keep playing. Music is our gift and it’s fun to do. Like I say it’s good for us.” Barbara Chamberlin
The Whitehorse Community Choir performs twice per year at Christmas and in the spring. Registration begins the first week in September and everyone is welcome.
