The Yukon Government has awarded an almost $188,000 contract to Stantec Consulting to see where investments in aviation will be needed in Yukon over the next ten years.
In a statement, the honourable Richard Mostyn says the strategy will focus around technical data, research and stakeholder feedback around Yukon's 28 airports and aerodromes.
Titled the "Yukon's Flight Path Aviation Strategy", Mostyn says the rough guide is critical to seeing how Yukoners want aviation in the territory to develop.
Highways and Public Works Spokesperson Oshea Jephsen says it's important the Yukon Government gets the strategy right from the start.
"Yukon's aviation infrastructure continues to grow. We know it plays a very important role here in the territory when it comes to industry development, tourism and getting people in and out of the territory. We just want to make sure we're on the right track and Yukoners can contribute to that path. Do they want us to see us spend more money in infrastructure or around community airports? We want them to tell us where they think it's important we spend that money."
Jephsen says there are many ways the Yukon Government can invest in the territory's future aviation strategy.
"There's been a lot done by Highways and Public Works so far in terms of investment. That's everything from the Dawson City Airport Runway, new equipment being added to the Whitehorse Airport, or upgrades to the maintenance facility up in Dawson. All those pieces contribute to Yukon's aviation infrastructure and helps us support Yukon aviation throughout the territory. Now we're asking Yukoners to make sure were on the right track."
Jephsen says public consultation around the strategy will be conducted with Yukoners next fall.
Almost 34 million dollars has been invested in operations and maintenance around aviation across the territory so far this year.
